Sonic is way faster than Mario but Mario is a very good jumper and is a better swimmer and stronger character compared to Sonic.
All characters will be balanced in Olympics so that one character doesn't dominate. Besides I'm not sure if Sonic could beat Mario in pure physical strength like in a discus throw or something. Maybe.Although I still find it hard to accept the fact that Mario is running beside Sonic actually keeping up. It's just unnatural...
Sonic can't swim, he doesn't really jump higher than mario, and you mentioned speed twice.
I'm going to go out on a limb here but I'm gonna say that the character who has the better player controlling them will win.Now I could be wrong but if the better player controls Sonic then Sonic will win, if the better player controls Mario then Mario brings home the gold.

I never really though Sonic seemed that much faster(going by the SNES/Genesis games)then Mario. I mean he of course was faster, but not really by much. Mario is pretty fast when he's running, also Sonic needs hills and quarter-pipes to go fast.BTW I'm pretty sure everyone will be equal, like Mario Party 2-8.

this will most likley sound Crazy, but Maybe since Sonic and Mario are in our real world.. maybe something like Gravity.. or reality has a factor in slowing out little hedgehog friend down. Like I said.. sounds Crazy.. but in the game world Sonic blows Mario away agreed. Gotta be our reality. Mario has been here before (Mario is missing) so He'd be more used to it. ^_^
Mario may be stronger but there is no way he can stand a chance in a race against sonic. Sonic is the fastest thing alive (thats right from the old sonic cartoon opening theme)If they stay true to the characters sonic should own in racing although i'm sure they'll tone him down for this game. I think they could've thought of a much better plot then racing at the Olympics. Sonic could beat Mario in any type of race. They'll have him slowed down a lot or they'll speed Mario up.
